The light at night
It is night at the lighthouse. "Come up," says Grandad. "Look at the light."
The light turns above us. Can you see the water? I can see it. I like standing here.
"Where is my flashlight?" "In your bag, under the map." There is moonlight on the water and starlight in the sky.
"When did you go away?" I ask. He is quiet. "Look at the skylight. Sit down."
Far below, a headlight moves on the road. The spotlight of a boat turns on the water.
"I like living here," he says by the firelight, "but I don't like the hills." "What is in the hills?" He looks away. "Ask your grandmother."
