The long way round
Two ways leave the town: one straight, one through the trees. Mr Blake always takes the straight one. “It is shorter than the other,” he says.
His watch says twelve minutes. The next day it says eleven. The motorway is faster than the pathway.
He does not smile. “Eleven minutes is not better than twelve,” he thinks. One morning a barrier stands across the shortcut.
He walks down the old walkway instead. Light falls through the trees and he hears birdsong.
Halfway along, the shopkeeper says good morning from his doorway. “Is this way slower than the motorway?” asks Mr Blake. “It is slower, but it is quieter,” says the shopkeeper. Mr Blake stops and talks for a long time.
Behind him the short road is empty, and the railway hums beyond the barrier. The next day he takes the long way again. Which is better, quicker or slower?
