The empty chair
Mr Bell is the old neighbour who comes to Gran's bookshop at nine every morning. On Tuesday his chair by the window is empty, and his cup stays on the shelf. “I will call up his house,” says Gran. The old phone rings for a long time.
Nobody answers it. “He is the one man who never goes out before ten,” she says. Gran writes a notice for the shop window and turns the sign to CLOSED.
Nick comes in with the bread. “Can you call round to Mr Bell's and knock hard?” she asks. “And call back at once,” Gran adds. Nick puts the bread down and takes the key.
Nick knocks for two minutes, then bends down to call out through the letterbox. Then he remembers something. The phone that rings downstairs doesn't wake him. He looks up at the dark bedroom window and runs down the hill to the clinic.
The waiting room is full, and the queue goes past the desk to the open door. Mr Bell is sitting in the middle of it with his hat on his knee. “Who is the doctor that sent for you?” asks Nick. “Your own mum,” laughs Mr Bell.
Mum opens her door. “I had to call in six people before nine,” she says. Nick runs back up the hill. “We can call off the search,” he tells Gran.
Gran lifts the mat by her own door. The man who called back left a notice. It says: “Gone to the clinic, back at twelve.” “I will call on him at six,” says Gran. “Two lost hours call for tea.”
