The gate in the hedge
It is Saturday, and the old hedge behind Gran's bookshop has grown too wide. It leans across the path, and nobody is able to reach the back door. “Last summer I was able to cut back the hedge,” says Mum, “but this year I can't.”

Nobody answers her. Then Sara's scissors hit something hard and flat. Under the wet leaves there is an old wooden gate, green with moss. “Grandad made that gate,” says Gran. “I wasn't able to open it for years.”
Mimi is already on the other side. She cut across under the hedge an hour ago. “Will you be able to open it?” she calls through the gate. Gran pushes it, and the gate swings open. “She was able to cut through my hedge,” says Gran.
