The knot and the plank
It is Saturday morning, and the tide is low in the harbour. Grandad wants to move eight boxes of fish from the wall down to his boat. A long plank lies between the harbour wall and the wet deck.
“Hold on,” says Grandad. “That plank is older than Nick.” Nick laughs and ties a new rope to the end of it. Grandad looks at the knot for a long time. Although the plank looks strong, he shakes his head.
“Help me hold up this end,” says Dad, and Nick takes the first box. “Hold down that corner with your foot,” Grandad tells Sara. “Hold back a little,” he calls. “Even though the rope is new, the knot is my old one.”
The wind gets up, and the boat pulls at the rope. “We must hold off until the tide turns,” says Dad. “Can we hold over the last two boxes, even though the market opens at ten?” asks Nick.
“Hold out your hand,” says Grandad. Nick gives him the wet rope, and Grandad ties it again. “Will the old knot hold together?” asks Sara. “It will,” says Grandad.
Then a wave lifts the boat, and the plank cracks in the middle. The box falls into the water, though the rope does not break. This time Nick does not laugh. Grandad lifts the wet rope. “Although the rope held on, the plank fell.”
