The knot in the fog
Fog sits low over the harbour, and the wet stone is cold under the boats. Grandad wants the boat tied before the tide turns. His hands are stiff in the cold. He works hard at the knot.
“I can hardly bend my thumb,” he says. Sara takes the rope and turns her wrist to hold it. Every joint in his hand is cold, and the wet rope will not go round.
Mimi comes down the slipway with her rabbit and stands near the rope. Sara rubs her palm on her sleeve to warm it. The fog is cold on her cheek, and she swallows.
“Pull hard,” Grandad says. Sara pulls hard. The rope hardly moves. Mimi fills her lungs and holds her breath.
Mum comes along the harbour wall in her warm coat. “Did you pull hard, or did you pull for a long time?” she asks. “In this cold a nerve works slowly, and a stiff hand hardly grips at all.”
Grandad looks down the slipway and shakes his head. “My vision is hardly better than yours in this fog,” he says. Sara looks along the rope and finds a fresh scratch in the wet paint.
She follows the line down to the water, and the answer is standing on it. Mimi’s small heel is planted on the wet rope, holding it flat against the stone. “Now pull hard,” Sara says, and the knot goes round the post at once.
