The rule nobody read
A grey card has hung by the school door for years, and nobody remembers who wrote it. It says that the Friday seminar is compulsory, and that every pupil must come.
Ben reads the card by the door on Monday. “We're supposed to bring the textbook.” Sara shakes her head. “We're supposed to do the revision at home.” Nobody in the class agrees, and nobody asks Mr Owen.
On Friday, Ben walks up to the front door of the institute beside the school. The doorman steps out. “You're not supposed to be in here.” “Are we supposed to wait here?” Ben asks, but the doorman just looks at the sky.
Back at school, Mr Owen finds them in the corridor. “Discipline is not the point of it,” he says. “The curriculum says that a seminar is offered every Friday. It was never compulsory for you.” “It was compulsory for me, when I was young. Nobody has read it properly for thirty years.”
Sara looks up. “So the examination in June does not depend on it?” “No,” Mr Owen says. “But the scholarship does, and that is why people still come.” Ben laughs. “We were never supposed to be afraid of it.”
That evening the doorman takes the grey card down and puts it in a drawer. On Monday the corridor is louder than it has been for thirty years.
