The empty line
Mr Owen pins a paper notice on the school gate. The town contest is on Saturday. The school needs one name for the harbour marathon, and nobody has written anything.
Ben reads the notice and holds his bat against his shoulder. “I'd rather stay on the pitch than run ten miles.” He would rather face a fast opponent with a bat in his hands.
Sara laughs and says she would rather be a spectator with a flask of tea. She shakes her head at the notice. “I'd rather not run in front of the whole town.”
Nick comes up the hill with his backpack and hears the question. “I'd rather spend Saturday gaming,” he says. The line under the notice stays empty on the gate. In this town people would rather watch than run.
Mr Owen explains that the next town has entered a strong rival for the race. He looks along the row of desks. “Would you rather lose without trying?”
Sara asks who will start the race. Mr Owen says the town referee starts it at nine. Ben looks at his bat, then at the long coast road, and says nothing.
Mr Owen takes the pencil from behind his ear and writes his own name on the notice. He turns round with a small smile. “I'd rather run it myself than watch another victory go to them.” Ben grins and picks up the pencil, because he would rather not let his teacher run alone.
