The hen in the yard
Behind Gran's bookshop there is a small yard with a wooden crate and three brown hens. Mimi opens the crate gently, and a small brown hen steps out onto the wet stones.
The hen bounds across the yard and slips on a wet board. “Catch it, Sara!” Mimi shouts from the step. Sara runs out of the shop to chase the bird, but it turns quickly.
Nick comes down from the flat and tries to grab the hen with both hands. He drags the heavy crate across the yard, but the bird runs round it.
The hen dives under the wooden steps and sits in the dark. Sara lies down and stretches one arm downwards into the narrow gap. “Pull it out slowly,” Nick says. “Do not frighten the poor thing.”
The hen rushes out at the other end and runs for the gate. Nick and Sara follow it to the yard exit, but they are far too slow.
Gran comes out with her stick and watches them. “You are all chasing it too hard,” she says. Nick does not open the gate quietly. The hen turns back along the wall.
Slowly, Mimi walks to the middle of the yard with a piece of bread. Mimi holds the bread out quietly. The hen walks straight to her feet. “How did Mimi catch it so easily?” Nick asks.
