The Light on the Cliff
This is the old lighthouse. In daylight it is white and quiet.
These stairs go up for a long time. That room at the top holds the big light.
At night the spotlight turns and turns. Those ships far away are looking for it.
"Is that a boat?" I asked. "No, those aren't boats," said Grandmother. "Those are stars." In starlight the sea is silver, and in moonlight it is white.
We sat by the firelight with tea. "Sit by the firelight," she said. My flashlight was on the floor and its light was yellow. "Your flashlight is on the floor," she said.
Above us there is a skylight full of stars. Far below, a car's headlight moved along the road, and then this long night was quiet again.
