The oldest bridge
Sara walks with her gran along the riverside every Sunday. They always stop on the same stone bridge over the river.
“This is the oldest bridge in the town,” her gran says. It is not the longest bridge, and it is not the busiest one.
Sara looks down at the riverbed and sees the stones under the water. A riverboat comes slowly under the arch.
“Which is the oldest stone in the bridge?” Sara asks. Her gran does not answer. She walks down to the riverbank.
Under the arch there is one small mark in the stone. “I made it when I was nine. It was the most difficult thing I did that year.”
Now Sara knows: the oldest bridge in the town has the newest story. Every Sunday they stop there, and it is the best minute of the day.
