The same tent
On Saturday morning it rains. The summer fair is on the field behind the old town hall, and the grass is one big puddle. Nina brings along a cake for the cake table. “Every year I bring along a cake,” she says, “and every year it rains.”
Ben brings up a plan. “Why don't we put up your dad's big tent so that everyone can stay dry?” “Why do you always bring up the tent?” Sara asks, but Dad likes the idea. He brings in the tent from the car and puts it up over the cake table. Then he ties it to the fence so that it won't blow away.
At eleven the wind comes in from the sea, strong enough to bring down a tent. And it does: the tent goes down, and the cake table with it. Nina and Sara bring out the cake from under the wet tent. It is fine, because the box is strong. “Well,” says Dad, “so much for the tent.”
Then Sara remembers something. She runs to Mr Bell's house to bring round his old photo of the 1990 fair. In the photo the fair is inside the town hall. “It rained in 1990 too,” she says. “They moved everything inside so that it could go on.”
One old photo can bring about a big change. Dad opens the hall, and Ben and Sara bring back the tables from the field. Nina puts the cake inside so that it can't get wet again. By twelve the fair is in the hall, and it is warm and dry.
At two the sun comes out. “Why did we bring in the tent at all?” Ben asks. Nobody goes back outside. Sara puts the old photo on the cake table so that everyone can see it. Then she looks at it again and laughs. In the corner of the photo there is a fallen tent. “Dad,” she says, “it is the same tent.”
