The night the power went off
On a wild October night a storm comes in from the sea. The rain hits the windows, and the wind shakes the old boat shed in the harbour. “Will it go on all night?” Sara asks at the window. “It will,” says Grandad. “Nobody can go out tonight.”
At nine the lights blink, and the power and the television go off together. The house is dark and quiet. “The lights often go off in a storm,” says Mum. “We will go without television tonight.” She finds the box of candles in the kitchen.
Grandad is used to going without power after forty years at sea. He lights a candle and smiles. “I used to fish at night with one small lamp. Bring your schoolbook, Sara,” he says. “We can go over the words for your test by the candle.”
Mimi is not used to sleeping in the dark. She holds her rabbit tight and will not go to bed. “Are you used to sleeping in a storm, Grandad?” Sara asks. “At sea you go through many storms, and you learn to sleep in them,” he says. “You soon get used to sleeping in the dark.” “Can I sleep in your bed tonight, Sara?” Mimi asks. “Yes, go ahead,” says Sara, “but the rabbit sleeps on the floor.”
“The wind will go down by morning,” Grandad says at the door of Sara's room. “Every storm goes down in the end.” Mimi listens to the rain for a long time. Then she sleeps, and the rabbit sleeps on the floor.
In the morning the wind goes down, and the power comes back. The lights come on all over the house. “Turn the lights off!” says Mimi from the stairs. “I am used to the dark now, and the rabbit likes it.”
