The torch and the fence
It was October, and the light went early in the small seaside town. Nina walked with Sara, Ben and Mimi to the top of the field path. She gave Sara an old metal torch and told them that they had to keep together. “Keep off the wet grass,” she said.
The path went down beside a long wooden fence. Mimi walked slowly, and soon she could not keep up. “Keep on walking,” Ben told her. Mimi said that she didn't want to walk any more.
Halfway down the hill there was a gate in the fence. An old white sign on it said “Keep out”. “Keep back,” said Sara, and she pulled Mimi away from the gate. Then something moved behind the fence, and a low sound came out of the dark.
“Keep down the noise,” said Ben. Sara asked him if he was afraid. Ben said that he wasn't afraid of anything. Mimi said that they should all keep away from the gate.
Sara kept the torch low and used it very little. Ben told Sara that he couldn't see the path. Sara said that she was keeping the torch for the steep part. Then the light went yellow and died, and Mimi began to cry.
Then a small red light came on beside them. Mimi held up a tiny torch from her coat pocket. “Where did you keep that?” asked Ben. Mimi said that Nina had put it in her coat at the top of the path. Her small light showed only an old boat behind the fence, and they kept on down the hill.
