The bookshelf in the box
There is a new bookshelf in a long flat box in the hall. The picture on the box shows how to put together the shelf. “We will put it together on Saturday,” Dad says.
But Dad puts it off. One Saturday it rains, and the next Saturday he has to mark exams. “Can we put it off one more week?” he asks. “No,” says Mum. “You can't put it off for a third week. Nobody can put off a bookshelf for ever.”
So Sara and Ben put it together themselves on Sunday morning. Ben reads the paper, and Sara has to put down the pieces on the floor in a line.
By lunch the bookshelf stands by the window. Sara begins to put back the old books, and Ben climbs on a chair to put up the new ones on the top shelf.
Mimi comes in with her rabbit. She takes a book down and puts it away in the wrong place, and then another one. “Put them back, Mimi,” says Sara. “Where do I put them back?” Mimi asks. “Put them down here, and I will put away the rest.”
In the evening Gran comes in with a candle. “Put on the light, Sara, and let me look,” she says. “Who put this together?” “We did,” says Ben. “Then put out the candle and put it away — a candle and a bookshelf don't go together.” Dad says nothing and carries the empty box out.
