It is such a windy day that the sand runs along the beach like water. Sara and Ben have taken Mimi and her new little dog down to the beach. The dog has a red collar, and Mimi holds it with both hands. “Don't let him run off,” says Sara. But the tide is out, the beach is wide, and the dog runs off towards the sea.

“Run after him!” shouts Mimi. Sara and Ben run after the dog. He is so fast that nobody can catch him. “Dogs run away when you shout,” says Ben. “We have to walk.” They walk, and the first waves run over the flat sand and over their shoes.

They go up the steps to look for him, and at the top they run into Mr Bell. “Is he so far away that he can't hear me?” asks Mimi. “He can hear you,” says Mr Bell. “He is so happy that he can't stop.” Ben runs through the plan: the rocks, the boats, the steps, the road. “Let's run through it once more,” says Sara. “No time,” says Ben.

The sun goes down, and Ben takes out a torch. It is such an old torch that the battery runs down in ten minutes. “Don't let it run down,” says Sara. “Turn it off between the rocks.” The tide comes in fast. “We are going to run out of time,” says Ben. The water is so high that they can't get to the rocks.

They run out of time and out of beach, so they walk back along the road in the dark. Mimi is too small to walk fast, so Sara carries her. Then Ben stops at Mr Bell's front garden. “Look,” he says. The little dog is sitting in Mr Bell's bird bath, drinking the rain water.

It is such a strange place that everyone laughs, even Mr Bell at his window. “I ran into him at my gate an hour ago,” says Mr Bell. “He didn't want to run away from a warm garden.” Mimi holds the red collar all the way home. “Next time I will hold it so tightly that he can't run off,” she says.
