The last boat
Last summer Nick decided to take up sailing. Grandad had sailed for fifty years, and now he wanted a week off.
“Take over the boat for me,” he said. Nick had never taken a boat out alone, but he said yes. “Can I take out the blue one?” he asked, and Grandad nodded.
On the first morning Nick took out the small blue boat. He had not looked at the sky, and by ten the wind was strong. “Take down the sail!” Grandad shouted on the radio.
But it was too late: a strong wind can take away a small boat in a minute, and the boat was already outside the bay. “Had you checked the wind?” Grandad asked. “No,” said Nick. “I hadn't.”
“Take back the boat now — slowly,” said Grandad. By the time the lifeboat arrived, Nick had already taken the boat back into the bay with a rope on the sail. He was wet and tired, but the boat was fine.
“You take after your grandfather,” said Mum that evening. “He had done exactly the same thing at nineteen.” Grandad said nothing. “Take off that wet jacket,” he said at last, and he put his old cap on Nick's head.
