The morning shift
The harbour wakes at six, and the quay smells of diesel and cold rope. Nick, who starts his shift today, walks down the steps with his boots in one hand.
A wooden hut holds the work list, which the chief signs every morning. Nick was an applicant in January. Now he is a recruit. The whole crew already knows his name.
Old Sam, who retired ten years ago, sits on a crate by the crane. The chief assigns the heavy nets. Nick gets the chain and the empty boxes. “Watch the chain,” Old Sam says, without getting up from the crate.
By nine his arms ache, and he understands what harbour labour really means. The crane sticks, so they call the mechanic, who lives above the boat shed. “That is skilled work,” Old Sam says. “Stand back and watch him.”
Sara, who doesn't work here, brings the tea down the steps. “Half this workforce is over sixty,” she says, counting the yellow jackets.
At noon Dad comes along the wall with a paper bag of rolls. “Did you meet Old Sam, who taught me the knots?” he asks.
The chain slips at two, and the whole quay goes quiet. The chief, who has the list in his hand, looks straight at the crate. Old Sam ran this shift for forty years. He lifts two fingers, the crew moves, and Nick sees who really runs this harbour.
