The line nobody read
The town paper wants a story about the old bookshop on the street. The shop has stood there for forty years. Gran was given a letter about the paper on Monday morning. Sara read it to her twice. Sara calls it local journalism at last. Gran only laughs and puts the kettle on.
A full page of coverage was offered to the shop in the spring edition. Gran was also offered a short editorial about her fifty years behind the counter. Sara reads both lines twice and puts the sheet down without turning it over.
Nick comes home from university that evening and hears about the letter in the hall. He says the shop was promised the same publicity two years ago. Gran was not told about that plan. No publication ever reached her counter.
Mr Bell knocks at six with his own letter folded in his coat pocket. He was sent an email about a live broadcast from the harbour on Saturday. A broadcaster from the local radio was shown the shop last winter. Nothing came of it.
Sara asks the question nobody has asked. “Were we told when they want our answer?” Nick reads the bottom line aloud: the shop must send a logo and a short animation by Wednesday.
Everyone was given the same sheet. Nobody turned it over that week. Gran finds her old painted shop board in a drawer. “Read the back next time,” she says.
