The bell from a ship
The brass bell over Gran's bookshop door has hung there for fifty years. It is said that the bell came from a ship. Nobody can say who told the story first.
On Thursday Sara hears two customers whisper by the tall shelves. “It is thought to be two hundred years old,” one of them says. Sara carries the news straight to Mimi.
Mimi screams with delight and drops her rabbit. “Is it thought to be worth a lot of money?” she asks. Sara cannot clarify anything, because nobody has told her much.
By Friday the story has grown a second half. It is believed that a diver pulled the bell out of deep water. Gran hears a boy declare that the bookshop is now rich.
“Strangers ring it all day now,” Gran says. Gran blames the story, not the children. Sara insists that Mr Bell must remember the bell. He is believed to know every boat that ever came into the harbour.
On Saturday Mr Bell comes in with his stick and a paper bag. “Somebody had better inform you,” he says. “That bell is mine,” he adds. He assures Gran that no ship ever carried it.
He bought it in a junk shop for two pounds, because his own name is on the side. “It isn't known who started the story,” Gran laughs. Mimi looks at the floor and confesses. “I told Ben it came off a ship,” she says. Gran accepts the apology and gives the old bell a clean.
