The bell on the shelf
The school bell has gone from the shelf in Mr Owen's classroom. A clean round mark sits in the dust. Mr Owen counts the shelf twice and says nothing.
“I remember seeing it on Friday,” Ben says. “It was there after the music lesson.” Sara assumes he has mixed up the days. Her assumption is quick and firm. “You are thinking of Thursday,” she tells him.
Sara tries to recall the walk to the cupboard, and the picture will not come. She hesitates by the window. The confusion in the room grows. Three people remember three different afternoons.
“Did anyone remember to shut the cupboard?” Mr Owen asks. Ben is convinced that he did. “I didn't stop to check the shelf,” he admits, and his concentration breaks. Sara stopped looking after ten minutes. Now she wishes she had gone on.
Mimi comes in with her cloth rabbit. She tries to distract everyone. “Mimi, please don't,” Sara says. But Mimi is pulling at her sleeve with both hands.
“I remember Mr Owen putting it in a box,” Mimi says. Mr Owen opens the low cupboard, and the brass bell sits there in blue paper. “I remembered to put it away on Friday,” he admits. “And then I stopped thinking about it.” Ben has to acknowledge that his Friday was really Thursday, and his certainty melts. “Next time,” Mr Owen says, “try asking the smallest person in the room.”
